Women and Reality TV

Until we talked about it in class this week I never really saw the harmful effects of what kind of reality TV shows are out there and especially how they portray women. They are seen a mean or violent and that;s not the case for most women, that's just the way they are seen on TV. I would always watch these kinds of shows and not really think anything of. I mean if it was reality TV then it must really be how women act toward each other right? Actually, I think for the most part that most of this stuff is staged, just for entertainment purposes but why is that considered entertainment? Why do people find it enjoyable to watch women tear other women apart. I think most people would find it pretty boring to watch a show about how a women wakes up, goes to work, then comes home. I don't think a show like that would have much of an audience and probably wouldn't last very long. For example when we were watching clips every single one of them showed a women either fighting, swearing, or bad mouthing other women. Unfortunately this is the type of thing that people want to see on realty shows because it would be considered boring if it wasn't showing these types of things. If a reality show, for some reason doesn't decide to show the violence of women people would call in saying that the show is boring and they wanted more fighting which creates more drama, and that makes the show entertaining. When I would watch the old MTV reality shows there was always something happening on them whether it be a women was mad at another because she looked at her wrong way or just because someone said something about her. I found it kind of funny at the time I was watching and I wondered whether women really acted this way or if they were going off a script because the show did claim to be a 'reality'. I find it kind of sad that I actually enjoyed and still do enjoy some shows like that. This makes think that if people actually watch these shows so they can relate to what other women are doing or if it makes them feel bad about themselves. Do they think it's putting a stereotype on women? I think it is, in the sense that all women are violent and angry towards each other and that's not the case. A lot of women do know how to take care of a problem in non-violent ways like talking it out instead of throwing a punch. I think that all reality shows do is put women purposely in these types of situations where they feel they need to fight just so the show keeps an audience,

  1. I agree with this because it's a little upsetting to see women act this way. I'm sure they don't want to act like this, but this is probably the only way that women will be able to create a name for themselves. Watching these women basically abuse each other is not the way that the media should show these women.
