Women In Reality
Television
This week in class
we discussed the roles that women in reality television. The way women are
portrayed in television is not how women are necessarily in real life. I feel
as though women are trying out for these roles, so they become someone they are
not when they are in reality television show. I feel as though when they are on
reality TV shows, they are acting to meet the requirements that the producers
want the character to be.
One of the
examples of a reality TV shows that we discussed in class was the show Jersey
Shore. Even though, I used to love watching this show growing up and would look
forward to watching it every Thursday night. I have to say they choose the
trashiest women to represent the roles of the women. No women act like that in
public like the way Jwow, Sammi, Snooki, and Deanna did. The fact that had
nicknames for the snow shows that they are not acting like their true self in
the show.
Another TV show
that comes to mind when thinking about the false representation in reality TV
is teen mom. That show is not a very accurate representation of what teen mom
is like. They create drama in that show to make it interesting or else people
would not watch it regularly. You have
these young girls watching these shows and it gives an inaccurate
representation of what teen pregnancy and motherhood is like.
Another thing that
was mentioned was how violence has increased in society based on the fact of
seeing reality TV women fighting on screen. Young girls grow up with the vision
that this the only way to deal with problems, as that is how the women in
television handle their problems. When in fact, there is numerous ways to deal
with issues and problems rather than the way that reality televisions stars
deal with it.
In conclusion, I
feel as though reality television is not an actual representation of reality. People
are trying out for these specific roles, so they are not acting like their true
self they are conforming to the description of the roles of the characters. The
behaviors that they portray are not accurate and because of the way they act in
the shows it promotes behaviors that were not seen behavior.
Reality tv is everything but realistic. I too loved the show Jersey Shore, but I could never understand the actions of those girls. They were trashy, but I found it funny and entertaining. It was probably more enjoyable for me to watch because their lifestyle was so unattainable for me.
