Gender Roles and
Stereotypes
This week in class we discussed the
issue of genders and the stereotypes that come along with them. In society,
there are stereotypes of what a boy and girl can do. An example of this would be when a baby is
born; you usually associate the color blue with a boy and a girl you usually
associate with the color pink. This stereotype has been set in society because
of the way people perceive and set these stereotypes. Women are seen to act a certain way and
perceive themselves in a certain way, just like men are seen to act in society
in a certain way.
In
some TV shows you will find women that do not portray the social norms of their
gender. An example that comes to mind when thinking about women that do not
show women behavior in television shows is Emily Thorne (Amanda Clark) in
Revenge. She stands up for herself, beats up men, and talks back to other
people. She is someone that holds her own, and does not rely on anyone but
herself and she did a good job at it. It
is very unusual to see women take on this role in a television show. Women do
not usually show qualities that are usually seen by men in TV shows.
I
believe that there would not be as much judgment if there was no such thing as
stereotypes based on your gender. People could act they wanted to act and not
have to worry about it , if it was to feminine or masculine. Society would be
more connected without gender sterotypes.
Another
activity that we did in class was for us to put a topic or subject on the whiteboard
that we would like a television star to talk about in a show. A topic that I
would like to see be discussed is how to be successful and how to focus on the
future rather than reminiscing on the past. When thinking about that subject,
nothing comes to mind of an example that this has already been done by a
television star. It was interesting to
think of topics that should be seen in television shows but they are not.
