Entry 9
This week in class discussion we discussed women in television, gender roles, and stereotyping.  Starting class talking about gender roles and stereotyping was eye opening.  Children now of days are growing up believing that girls can only enjoy toys that are pink or toys that are geared toward girls such as dolls.  Girls are not the only children growing up believing they can only play with certain toys, boys are also growing up believing they can only play with blue toys and trucks.  In previous times all children played with whatever toys were available and they were not judged for playing with "girl toys" or "boy toys".  The stereotyping in today's society is not only in everyday life but also in television shows and movies.
In "Enlightened Sexism" shows such as Grey's Anatomy are talked about how women are portrayed to be more powerful but the amount of shows that portray men in a powerful light to the amount of shows that portray women in a powerful light is very skewed.  Most shows that focus around the views of women end up being solely based around relationships and how they have to rely on men to make anything of their lives.  One show that came to mind while reading this week was the show Grey's Anatomy.  Grey's Anatomy is a show that shows women in a powerful light because the women surgeons are held to the same standards as the men.  Still throughout the show it is often that women are getting caught up in relationships and being portrayed as overly emotional but I enjoy the show because it shows different sides of men also not just women showing that men are not the perfect specimen.
By  creating a better variety of shows about women for women would be a step in the right direction for our society.  By creating shows about women pertaining to important things such as education, work, health instead of emotions, body image, and relationships it would allow women to be seen differently and more powerful instead of weak people that are less superior to men.
