Stereotyping in Reality
Television
This week
in class we talked about women in reality television viewing shows such as
“Love and Hip Hop” and “Basketball Wives”.
We viewed multiple different shows and every show portrayed black women
the same way.
People in
society view different races in different ways because of they way they are
portrayed in the media. For example, the
shows we viewed this week showed black women arguing with one another and
punching one another. By viewing these
black women on television acting in such horrible manner people begin to
stereotype and view all black women in a negative light when that is not how
all black women act. Rarely do you see
this behavior in shows with white people besides occasionally in shows such as
“Real Housewives”.
Portraying
different races differently is one way that the media misconstrues people’s
opinions on different races. Another way
that the media interferes is how they edit everything people say on television
in attempt to make it more interesting.
Watching shows with women fighting non-stop may be entertaining for a
period of time but after viewing it over and over again and analyzing
television shows in class it makes you realize how incredibly unrealistic it
all it. Reality television is continuously
becoming less and less “real”.
