Rap Music
During class this week we talked about women in hip hop. We
specified on African American women in hip hop because we are getting more in
depth about racism and feminism play together and how African American women
have it harder in this male oriented world. The woman and hip hop movement
started in 1976 with Sharon Jackson she made her way in the rap world by
appearing at DJ Kool Here's parties. After that, many female rap artist
released CDs. In class we focused on Queen Latifah, who released her first rap
CD in 1989. Rap music back then used to be about women and expressing their feminist
and womanist ideas. It used to be about how they were struggling and saying how
bad men treated them. They expressed their ideas on how relationships really
were and their music was actually realistic about what was going on at the time.
Now a days woman’s rap music is about having
sex, doing drugs, getting ass…etc. I think that women’s rap music needs to go
back to the way it was, it isn’t like it used to be. I think that women need to
start rapping about real problem and what’s really going on in their life. They
shouldn’t be rapping about stuff to get men’s attention. The real rap needs to
make a come back.
I agree that the topics women used to discuss that was enpowering for them needs to be brought back. Women who rap used to show strength and now they sing about things that often degrade them
