This week in class we focused on what makes a good role model, and what is considered to sexual. With so many sexual women taking up the media, it can be difficult to say what is too sexual. We focused on people like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliot and other R&B artists. The R&B artists focus a little bit more on women’s rights and a more powerful message in my opinion. Although they are sexual, they stand for something. Beyoncé is the most powerful out of all these women and draws a lot of attention when she performs. Some people think that her message can be seen as contradicting. She says that she’s a feminist and that women deserve more than they have, but when she gets up on stage she shakes her booty, and conforms to what her husband Jay-Z wants from her. I personally don’t agree with this. I think that she has a love for dancing, and that by dancing she feels sexy. Just because she wants something more for women, doesn’t mean that she can’t be sexual. I think that a lot of people believe that feminists can’t have fun, and that everything that they do revolves around feminism. Other people like Nicki don’t really portray or stand for feminism in the same way as Beyoncé does.  I think that Nicki still a good role model though. Most people would disagree saying that she is too sexual, and that she conforms to what men want from women, but I don’t believe this. She recently came out with a documentary that showed where she grew up, and the struggles that she faces every day. The media often says that she has had an affair with Drake, or other rappers but she makes it very clear in her documentary that she never had an affair with any of them, and that she is more concerned and focused on her own career. She never really lets the media affect her, and although she’s extremely sexual I don’t think that she has really changed that much since she first entered the business. When she first became popular, she has crazy hair and even crazier outfits, but since then she has really calmed down and now dies her hair her natural color, and wears more age appropriate clothing. This year at the VMA’S she came out on stage with a dress that wasn’t zipped and had to hold it closed. People accused her of doing this on purpose, but she also made it clear in the documentary that there was not enough time for a wardrobe change and that they couldn’t close the dress. I believe that both her and Beyoncé are good role models for girls even though they are very different when it comes to their music and what they really stand for in the music industry.
