Hip Hop Music and Women

Hip-hop is a style of popular music of US black and Hispanic origin, featuring rap with an electronic backing. In today’s world, we can see that music through the years has changed in some ways. This week of class, we talked about women in hip-hop because we are trying to learn more about racism and feminism play a role together. We all know that now days, rap music includes derogatory lyrics about women and not just that but, videos typically showing women half-naked with the only purpose of getting more listener and viewers. Hip-hop has convinced our society that this is how women should be treated, and I think that people need to recognize and give women the respect that they deserve. Since 1980 the hip-hop has changed the way people think, In the beginning women were hardly mentioned in lyrics and videos, In the past people would rap about different life experiences, especially women, For example in class we talked about Queen Latifah, women that released her first rap CD in1989. If you listen to the song that this woman wrote, you will understand how different they are from rap music, made by man.

Queen Latifah music will argue problems that were happening in society. She made her mark by rapping about issues of black women. Her songs covered topics including relationships problems, domestic violence and harassment on the streets. At this point, we can compare how our society has changed throughout the years, in today’s world not body raps about this type of problems that daily happen in our society. I think this could change if we as society stop supporting the type of music that they made now that it just talks about sex, doing drugs, showing you has the power, Why don’t we made music that is going to help our future generation, that will inspired woman and man to be a better person in the future, why is it so hard to be a real role model for our followers by making music that will benefit them and inspired them to do what is right.
