Blog post #6
This week in class we focused on female gaze. We had to find a video that related to the female gaze along with male gaze. See how men and women acted in a music video together. The one video that stuck out to me the most that used both female and male gaze was the video As If by Sara Evans. Believe it or not out there in the world there are actually probably more videos that are more about the male gaze than the female gaze. This music video was very interesting to watch because it shows the men doing what the women usually do on a daily basis. Clean the house, vacuum and cleaning the dishes while the women just sit down and watch. This is very different for people to see because the women are usually the ones doing all the chores, and that is the reason why this music video is interesting to watch. No one sees men doing chores every day so its something new for people to watch.
In many music videos, women are still yet portraying their bodies to men. Yes that is their choice to make, but they need to realize that the whole world is seeing their bodies basically naked. One video I watched was 7/11 by Beyonce. In the music video, her and all her dancers seemed like they were having a blast. It is a good message to send out to people because it is a fun video and this is probably the only music video that is not serious. All videos are portrayed with women and men dancing on each other or women just portraying their bodies to the media. Beyonces music video just shows her dancing, yes in a sexual way, but she is still having a fun time and not showing off to any men in the video. Music videos are created in different styles. There are some where men are showing off the girls and vise versa. The thing that gets me is when women are showing off men, and men get mad about it all. Men will judge the women and be criticized for it, yet if men do it then it is no big deal. I would say feminism is still a problem around the world, but it has gotten better. Women feel the need to be treated like an actually women and not pushed and shoved around. Men see women as sex toys when they are dancing and have no clothes on. Men should not see women that way because we are more than sex toys. We actually mean something and we are not trash, which is mainly the reason why most women are feminists. Women should not portray their bodies to the media even if it will get them somewhere in life, because life just does not work that way.
