Music Video’s &
Female Gaze
The
male gaze is prominent in our society. This week I was trying to think of a
music video that would show female gaze rather than the male gaze. When
searching for one I was finding that most music videos were male gaze. In the
male gaze movement, the women are objectified in the music videos. Songs that I
believe would have female gaze because the lyrics in the song were empowering
to women actually did not have the videos to match along with it. I was really
disappointed in that, I think if you are going to have an empowering song and
lyrics for women then the music video should match up with it. I found it hard
to find a music video with portraying the female gaze.
One
video that I saw when we shared our music videos in class was “I luv you Popi”
By Jennifer Lopez. I like how at the beginning of the music video, she is
having girl talk with her friends and brings up the fact that women are always
sexualized and objectified in music videos so its time for men to be. That is
exactly what happens in the music video. Males are objectified in this video
instead of the females being objectified like always. I am so used to seeing
the females being objected, that it was good to see the roles reversed for
once.
In
the future, going forward I would like to see artists make more powerful songs
for women and actually have the music videos match the idea of the song. It
would be nice to see more music videos that are female gaze rather than male
gaze. A way people find comfort is music videos. So, seeing the music videos
not objective women would be a positive thing. It would make girls realize they
can dance, sing and have fun but their bodies do not need to be objectified. A
women’s body is not meant to be sexualized.
People
are not starting to point out body parts and trying to make them sexualized.
Since when does it matter how big your thighs are? How your shoulders look? How
your eyebrows look? People are now
putting a sexuality on body parts. Their just body parts! They are not meant to
be sexualized.
