In class this week we discussed the female gaze, which is the contrary of the male gaze that we have previously addressed. We picked different music videos that use the idea of the female gaze and I chose the video to the song Try by Colbie Caillat. This video had an extremely important message to women about how we should not try so hard to fit in with society.  The video was very touching because it started off with women wearing makeup and their hair done, and then throughout the video they began removing their makeup and letting their natural beauty shine through. She also used women of all different ethnicities, ages and sizes to show that no one is the same or perfect.  Colbie Caillat also started off in the video with makeup on and her hair done, and she ended up removing it to, removing the airbrush effect and taking her extensions out. Her showing her natural self got the message across even more because even though she is a celebrity, she was not afraid to show her natural look to get this important message across to women all around the world. The lyrics she sang also positively represented women because she sings of all of the things that society expects or us, and says how it only matters if you love yourself.  This video represented female gaze in a positive way because when male gaze is being represented it is usually sexualizing and objectifying women, but in female gaze it is showing that women are powerful and beautiful in their own skin.

  1. Try is a great song with a great message, I love the music video showing how much girls do to feel pretty, they shouldn't be putting on pounds of makeup or having their hair always done up. None of the girls are sexualized in the video or trying to appeal to me, it's based on natural beauty and accepting who they are, when I first heard the song I was happy to see that a song was being put out with this message. It's important for the female gaze to be shown more.

  2. Try is a great music video. I remember watching it and thinking why there are not more of this type. It sends out a great message that all girls should follow.
