Madonna’s Effect
Madonna was without a doubt a huge icon of her time. She continues to leave impressions on society by constantly pushing the envelope, whether it is in music or fashion. As we always discuss, what is shown in media has a deep impact on the people who watch it. Madonna impacted young girls and woman of the 80s significantly. Many saw her as a strong woman whom they admired for her talent and uniqueness. However, her sexual connotations in all of her work turned many off as well. Being controversial can be risky, especially in the 80s. Miley Cirus is a current day example on all the controversial ideas Madonna stood for. Miley is not the only artist who has been inspired by Madonna. Beyonce, Rhianna, Nikki Manaj, etc all have produced music and videos that had media buzzing.
I can’t say that all Madonna stands for is truly feminist. She is completely unique, talented and strong. However, the image she portrays suggests that woman must be sexually available instead of relying on pure musical talent. I believe that being inspired by a star is normal and beneficial for young girls. This is what gives girls hope to make a difference and accomplish any dream they have. However this dream can be poisoned if inspired by the wrong messages. Madonna’s fashion was a hit for young girls; fishnets, lace gloves, and thrift shop clothes. Her sexual lyrics and performances however, were not a statement worth copying.
Performances like Madonna’s videos Like a Virgin, and Miley Cirus’ performance at the VMAs are what destroy women’s image. It is such a problem to sustain a strong and professional image for woman, and I feel like acts like these are what is holding women back. Not only does society as a whole objectify woman, but women are objectifying themselves. In my opinion it means so much more to be a strong, confident, and classy role model over everything. This is what women stand for, and this is the mentality we should be portraying as a whole.
I agree with what you are saying. Madonna sends mixed signals on what she stands for. & I agree with these sexualized performes is what is making women not be able to progress in society. They feel like women don't even respect themselves, when they dress and performe in a sexualized way.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you Alessandra.Women are not respected in society because men thinks we do not have enough respect for ourselves, if we do, we wouldn't be able to get naked infront of thousands of people.
